Angela Baerwald PhD, MD, CCFP, MSCP

Dr. Baerwald completed a BSc degree in Physiology at the University of Saskatchewan in 1997, followed by a PhD in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences in 2003. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Ottawa/Ottawa Fertility Centre in 2004. From 2005 to 2019, she was a faculty member and PhD Scientist in the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Saskatchewan. During this time, she pursued medical training, earning her MD and completing residency training in Family Medicine between 2013 and 2019. From 2019 to 2026, she maintained a general family medicine practice within the Dept. of Family Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.

Dr. Baerwald currently serves as the Medical and Scientific Director of the Women’s Health Research Lab in the Dept. of OBGYN and as Medical Co-Director of the Women’s Midlife Health Program at Saskatoon City Hospital. Her research program is internationally recognized for advancing the understanding of ovarian function, uterine function, and hormone production throughout the natural menstrual cycle, as well as treatments for infertility, polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), and perimenopause and menopause.

She maintains active research collaborations across the University of Saskatchewan, including with the Dept. of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences, the College of Kinesiology, the Dept. of Nutrition, the Dept. of Anesthesiology, and the Dept. of Family Medicine. She has also led numerous interdisciplinary studies with international collaborators in women’s health. An accomplished mentor, Dr. Baerwald is actively involved in the supervision and training of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners.

In addition to her research and academic leadership roles, Dr. Baerwald maintains a women’s health clinical practice at Lakeside Medical Clinic in Saskatoon. Her practice focuses on low-risk obstetrics and gynecology, fertility, contraception, polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), and menopause management. She holds certification as a Menopause Specialist through The Menopause Society and was elected to the Board of the Canadian Menopause Society in 2025.
